Black College Nines HBCU Poll – Week 6 (5/2/16-5/8/16)

Going 4-1 this past week, Alabama State University remains atop Black College Nines Top 10 Historically Black College and University (HBCU) large school baseball poll announced on May 10, 2016.

Alabama State completed a sweep against East Division rival Alabama A&M University this past weekend in conference play making the Hornets 34-15 overall and 24-0 in the SWAC.  ASU hit .344 in league play with 37 home runs. Since April 1st, the Hornets are 18-3.

Once again, Florida A&M University retains the No. 2 ranking. The rest of the large school poll looks like this…

Norfolk State University, sitting atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings, moves into the No. 3 spot. Bethune-Cookman University’s No. 4 ranking remains the same this week as the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff leaps three spots to No. 5.  Jackson State University stays at No. 6 and Grambling State University drops four spots to No. 7. North Carolina Central University moves up to No. 8 while Texas Southern University retains its No. 9 from the previous week poll. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore makes its debut in the Top 10 poll at No. 10.

Falling out of BCN Top 10 is Alcorn State University.

In the small school division, for the first time this season, from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), West Virginia State University earns the No. 1 ranking in Black College Nines Top 10 poll. The Yellow Jackets, 29-13 overall and 24-8 in the MEC, started the season unranked but has climbed steadily with a stout pitching staff.  The team earned run average is 3.20 with 261 strikeouts which help account for WVSU winning 15 of its last 20 ballgames.

Edward Waters College drops to the No. 2. Three teams remain the same this week as Selma University, Winston Salem State University, and Miles College retains their respective No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 rankings from the previous week. The rest of the small school poll looks like this… Claflin University moves up to No. 6, Stillman College falls a spot to No. 7, as both Benedict College and Paine College switch spots at No. 8 and No. 9 from last week. Jarvis Christian College stays put at No. 10.

The crowning of Black College Nines National Champions will be announced on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 at 10 AM (EST) on the Black College Nines’ website.

The Voting Committee of Black College Nines determines the Top 10 rankings. Overall records do not include ties.
