Alabama State Joseph Camacho Named 2016 Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist

Alabama State baseball student-athlete Joseph Camacho has been named a 2016 semifinalist for the 2016 Dick Howser Trophy, given to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player, as voted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

The award honors college baseball’s best player for the current season. The annual award is given to a top amateur baseball player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season.

Camacho, a senior pitcher, leads the Hornets in four-year career totals with 36-4 wins,  3.25 ERA, 58 appearances, 46 games starts, 316 innings pitched, allowed 114 earned runs, 82 walks, 266 strikeouts, 5 home runs and a .272 batting average against.

Camacho had another spectacular 2016 season. He led the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) going 10-0 on the mound with a 1.94 ERA, in 14 appearances, 70 hits allowed, 18 earned runs, 21 walks, 0 home runs, opponents batted .230 against, issuing 82 K’s in only 83.2 innings with only 21 walks. He did this while earning SWAC Pitcher of the Year honors for the third consecutive year.

After his freshman season at Alabama State in 2013, Camacho went 4-3 with only mixed success. He then became one of the top collegiate players in the nation during an outstanding, unprecedented four seasons while being on every national collegiate baseball watch list.  Camacho compiled an incredible two-year 22-0 record in regular season competition.

This is a great accomplishment for a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) student-athlete to make the list of one of the many top collegiate baseball players across the country.

The Dick Howser Trophy was created to honor college baseball’s success stories and showcase players like Camacho, who have raised the level of their game through hard work and determination as a student-athlete. At the end of the season, their field performance will demonstrate that they are among the top college baseball player in the nation.

The finalists will be announced on June 9, at the College World Series in Omaha Nebraska with the winner will be announced on June 18, the opening day of the 2016 CWS. Click here to see the rest of the story…..
