LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University athletic department teamed up with Coca-Cola to build new scoreboards at baseball’s Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium and the Alcorn Softball Complex this week.
“We’d like to thank Coca-Cola for their support of the University and athletics. They saw our needs and have been very supportive of our programs,” said director of athletics Derek Horne. “This will be great, not only for our fans but also our student-athletes and recruiting. It’s another great addition to all the improvements we’re making on campus.”
The new scoreboard features full inning-by-inning scores in the center, balls, strikes, outs and batter number at the top, Braves and Lady Braves as a header along with Alcorn State University, full logos, and advertisements for Coca-Cola and Dasani on the bottom.
“This was a much-needed improvement at our facility and the kids are pumped up about it. It’s going to give our field a good look and it goes along with some of the other things that we’re trying to do out here. We’re all really excited about it and we can’t wait to utilize it during the regular season,” said head baseball coach Bretton Richardson.
The new scoreboards are not only taller, but also more-than double the width of the previous scoreboards. The new scoreboards also have the ability to dim or brighten the actual numbers on the board for easier visibility depending on day or night games.
“It’s an exciting project,” said head softball coach Josef Rankin. “You’re always excited about getting something new. Our program definitely appreciates Coca-Cola’s contribution which adds another piece towards our mission to improve our softball facility.”
The Braves will open their 2017 season on Feb. 17 in New Orleans at the MLB Urban Invitational, while the Lady Braves will kick it off Feb. 16 against Kentucky State in a doubleheader at Vicksburg High School.
